term2.

Post by Toad on Sat May 09, 2009 9:53 am

Term 2. We want to ramp things up a bit for term 2. Our major goals are the Enviro conferences Term3 and power shift in the holidays. During the term we will be doing some small interfrom competitions, Group excursion to professional environment groups and a possible gathering with another school. We would like everyone to become more involved and take up some projects. Check the website regularly as we will actually use it from now one also weekly notices will be going out. A single weekly meeting just simply doesn’t cut it hence we are trying to work more over the web.

Recycle comps:

Post by Toad on Sat May 09, 2009 10:30 am

1. Battery competition:
Who: Interform
What: Most batteries collected by a form. To be collected by form Captain or SRC to be dropped of at the office or geography office.
Price: Pizza lunch funded by the EAG (which gets its money of the SRC) or other
In charge: Any member of the group
What needs to be done: Set date, price and make posters and bulletin/form captain notices. Posters need to be approved by the assistant principals.
Disposal: Battery recycling centre
Other/long term change: Pressure the government to introduce wide spread recycling bins/centres for batteries if an existing structure isn’t already operational.

2. Cork/ other:

Similar procedure to the battery competition.

3. Mobile phone:

Same type of procedure expects that mobile phones need to be disposed through Mobile Busters.
We have a box or they can simply be dropped of at any of their collection boxes at mobile phone stores.

The when and where
Power Shift will be held at the University of Western Sydney, Parramatta Campus - the geographical heart of Sydney.
It’s going down from Saturday 11 July till Monday 13 July.
What’s happening
Trainings: Conference attendees will learn the best practices of climate organising, including: campaign and event planning, recruitment, media, public speaking, lobbying, leadership development, coalition-building, campaign strategy, and community and campus organising.
Keynote Speakers & Bands: Attendees will be energised by leaders of the climate movement in Australia and worldwide. Speakers include Dr Tim Flannery, author of The Weather Makers, and Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chair of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Well-known Australian artists will help us celebrate our movement to solve climate change with a Saturday night concert.
State/Regional Break-Outs: After splitting into geographically-based groups, youth will identify upcoming state and regional opportunities to realise tangible climate progress and plan coordinated campaigns and events to make them happen. We will also facilitate the coordination of upcoming youth actions on climate change across the country.
Presentations: Diverse speakers will enlighten youth about the connections between Climate and Faith, International Security and Climate Change, How Combating Climate Change Leads to Job Creation, Climate Change from Indigenous peoples’ Perspectives, and many more presentations that will help build our movement and add new perspectives to the discussion.

2010 and Beyond: Leaders of all major parties - candidates for the Prime Minister of Australia at the next election - have been invited speak to their plan to reduce Australia’s GHG emissions to safe levels, forcing them to justify their policies to the generation that will be most affected by them.
